Shoes That Taste Good

I love my running shoes. (left: my current pair.) It's hard for me to throw them out when I've retired a pair. I try to find new jobs for them, like these will be my gardening shoes or these can be my mowing shoes.

But, I should just let them go. Better yet, I should recycle them. This site offers a list of homes and programs looking to repurpose our dear old shoes.

New shoes appeal to a mix of my senses:

  • touch (there are so many textures),
  • smell (I like new shoe smell),
  • sight (don't step on my new beautiful shoes!).

It seems I should also consider taste, especially when shopping for a new pair. Next time you shop, take note how shoes' colors are described. Some examples:

I once bought a pair of running shoes because I got hooked on its color (a pretty brown and pink). Not a good idea. Now, with shoe colors like rootbeer, orange popsicle and chocolate, I could be in trouble.

Not sure how to choose your next shoes? Read these guides on shoe fit and selection.

Or, if you're a triathlete, you could look to the elite triathletes and see what they are wearing.
(Thanks Active Toby for these links!) Slowtwitch.com recently ran two features:

Tell me:
- What flavor are your shoes?
- What do you do with your retired shoes?

I have never thought about flavors for my shoes. I would say they would be sweat and mud. LOL

As far as what I do with my retired shoes--They become my lawn mowing shoes or just not around shoes. I actually have a big L on both of my mowing shoes so it appears that I am saying that I have two left feet (which I do).

Thanks for the comment on my blog! I really do recommend the Nike Women's Marathon, if you have a chance to do it.

Sadly, my running shoes are not flavored - Saucony's ProGrid Hurricane 10s are only described as White/Light Blue.

Thanks for the site for retired shoes! I always donate to the Salvation Army, but think these are a great alternative.

Thanks for checking out my blog!

Shoe flavor: Saucony Pro Grid Guide and at the moment Ride. I will wear any shoe that does not have pink on it. I have had green, light blue, yellow, orange, grey, light purple, LOTS OF RED, and even black ones. But please, don't make me wear pink shoes. I will clean toilets for a week to avoid wearing pink trainers.

Right now my kid is wearing my cast off shoes. He has a huge selection to choose from.

Unfortunately, my feet are so strange I never get the luxury of picking 'pretty' shoes..they are ALWAYS the ugly ones shoved back in the corner!! They aren't delicious...but they are comfy! A very good friend of mine lives on a 'disability' pension which is next to nothing. Lucky for her, one of her friends is an avid runner with the same shoe size! Every 3 months is like Christmas for my friend as her running pal gives her a new and luxurious pair of high quality running shoes...something she could never afford the luxury of. So, I donate my 'close to new' running shoes to the local woman's shelter.

I'd wear "espresso" colored shoes because it reminds me of the energy I get from caffeine plus they will inevitably turn brown color from all the trail running. Now if they could just get them to smell like a fresh pressed double shot instead of the alternative ;)

Lazy Triathlete, Audrey and CoachLiz, excellent job repurposing your tired shoes!

Lynn, I hope one day a special pair of shoes in your color is waiting there for you, on sale even.

Toby, thanks so much for stopping by and for the comment. Yes, espresso sounds perfect.

trivortex, your feet may be dreaming of new shoes... happy feet?

Thanks everyone! Next time you shop for new shoes, I hope you'll check the color/flavor and let me know.
