The Pomegranate Experiment!

Cut, scoop, soak & strain! Cutting a pomegranate is easy when you know how to do it!

I should have done my research first--this morning I guessed wrong. I sliced my pomegranate in half and then bit into the membrane - YUCK!

Since that bitter mistake, I've learned a bit about pomegranates including:

- How to correctly open one. A chef demonstrates here.
- You eat the little seed-type things inside (arils.) You don't eat the white stuff around the arils...
- At the store, choose a pomegranate by weighing it, not by its color. Pick the heaviest one, it has more juice inside.
- Whole pomegranates can last "up to month on the counter or two months in the fridge." And frozen arils can last for months. I'd been worried that my pomegranate was going to rot. I'd only had it a week!

Recipes from the POM Wonderful web site:
On my list to try:
Grilled Portobello with POM Mustard Vinaigrette & Garden Greens
Crimson POM Jelly & Cream Cheese Sandwiches
POM Banana Freeze
Pan Toasted Brie with a POM Reduction Sauce

I should note, I was motivated to try an actual pomegranate after tasting juice samples from POM Wonderful this fall. They sent me a case of 100% Pomegranate Juice (Thanks!). The bottles are adorable! I tried my first taste after finishing a local tri.

Questions for You:
-What's something new you've recently tried?
- Do you like pomegranates?
- Have you tasted a sample from POM Wonderful? If so, give me the link to your review.

Thanks for your comment on my first triathlon. It was held in Phoenix and they did it in reverse since it was early morning and the organizers figured the temp would be chilly and that way the participants wouldn't have to bike and run after the swim. Since I'd never done one it was no big deal to me! I enjoyed looking at your blog and have it bookmarked so I can continue reading it. Good luck in all your endeavors.

I LOVE pomegranates! First I tried the juice, then at Whole Foods they have the little seeds already cut out for you and they put it in a small container. I got ambitious last year and tried to cut it as you did. It was very messy so I think I'll just stick to the pre cut ones! :)

I love pomegranates. I got another one today - it is a great winter treat. I also love POM wonderful, but it is a bit on the pricey side.

We're all about the pomegranates here. My kids love them. The juice is good but $$. I could bankrupt myself if I bought POM Wonderful on a regular basis.

As for new things I've tried - I rather reluctantly tried a friend's "meatloaf" made out of nuts instead of meat last week. I don't like tofu or other meat substitutes so I was shocked that this recipe was actually good. I felt like Sam-I-Am.

I bought my first pomegranate when they had little flyers next to them with instructions on how to open them! I have to say that pomegranate arils on top of ice cream is a pretty great combo!

Pomegranates are GREAT - the kids think so, too. I had no idea they could freeze! Another thing - the juice stains, but if you clean it up right away it will come out. Learned this after my children decided to see how far they could squirt each little seed of juice - who knew it could go so far?! Now I do!

Anne, thanks for visiting here as well! Best to you as well!

Karin, that sounds like a good idea, I'll have to look for the pre-packaged ones too.

Velma, I bought my 2nd one this week! Now we'll see if I can open it correctly!

Calyx Meredith, I'd love to try the nutloaf, interesting!

Brianna, we have 3 young boys. I hope they won't think of squirting the seeds! yikes!

Thanks everyone!
